(LAINYA COUNTY) – The Ministry of Mining has carried out an official inspection of mining sites in Lainya County, Central Equatoria, following reports of illegal activities in the area.
The visit on Wednesday this week was led by the Minister of Mining, Hon. Matiok Santino Akuei, PhD, who was joined by senior ministry officials, Director Generals and security agencies. The team confirmed the presence of both artisanal and large scale mining operations that are not registered with the government.
The Ministry said that these activities pose serious risks to government revenue collection and to the overall stability of the region. Officials explained that such practices bypass the country’s legal framework and undermine the management of South Sudan’s mineral resources.
Following the inspection, the Ministry announced that investigations had been launched to establish the full extent of the illegal mining. Immediate steps are also being taken to stop unauthorised operations and ensure that those involved face legal action.
The Ministry has called for close cooperation between government institutions and law enforcement agencies to address the issue. It urged the National Security Service, the Mining Police and the South Sudan People’s Defence Forces (SSPDF) to work together in protecting the country’s natural resources.
A statement from the Trade Ministry also reminded the public and businesses that the Mining Act of 2012 and the Mineral Regulation of 2015 provide clear rules for managing mineral activities. Section 20 of the Act gives police the authority to arrest without a warrant, a measure aimed at curbing illegal mining practices.
It also added that the government is determined to ensure that mining in South Sudan is properly regulated, transparent and beneficial to local communities and the national economy.
