(Juba) – South Sudan’s Minister of Mines, Martin Gama Abucha, is set to promote the country’s growing mining sector at the African Mining Week (AMW) 2025 conference.
The event will take place from October 1–3 in Cape Town, South Africa, and will run alongside the African Energy Week under the theme “Invest in African Energies.”
Minister Abucha is expected to participate in the Ministerial Forum, where he will present South Sudan’s policy frameworks, investment incentives, and infrastructure priorities that aim to attract international investment into the mining sector.
His presence at the conference is seen as part of a broader effort to position South Sudan as a serious mining destination on the African continent.
With significant mineral resources still largely untapped, South Sudan is seeking partners to help develop its mining industry.
The mines minister will use the platform to emphasize the country’s commitment to creating a strong and competitive mining value chain by collaborating with public and private investors globally.
African Mining Week is widely regarded as one of the continent’s key events for connecting financiers, geoscientists, developers, and policymakers working in the extractives industry.
Since taking office, Abucha has led efforts to advance geological mapping across the country to identify promising exploration zones and reduce investor risk. In April 2025, South Sudan hosted a high level delegation from Qatar, including both government and private sector actors.
The discussions focused on expanding seismic studies, refining gold locally, and increasing extraction of lead and other critical minerals. Qatar’s United Gold has already made investments in the country, including establishing gold marketing stations aimed at formalizing artisanal mining, which remains a major part of local livelihoods.
South Sudan is also expanding cooperation with South Africa to tap into its advanced mining technology and investment networks. Additionally, strategic partnerships have been formed with Russia’s ROSGEO, Canada’s CVMR, and U.S.-based REE-Magnesium to improve geological surveys and attract further exploration. These collaborations aim to build a comprehensive understanding of South Sudan’s mineral wealth.
In late 2024, South Sudan’s state oil company, Nilepet, reported the discovery of critical minerals following a six month geological survey.
The government has since announced plans to establish a national mining company to support broader sector development and consolidate state participation in mineral resource management.
AMW 2025 offers South Sudan a timely opportunity to showcase its mining ambitions to a global audience as these reforms and partnerships unfold.
The mines minister’s engagements at the event are expected to focus on building new partnerships and strengthening ties with current collaborators. The government hopes that stronger visibility at high level investment forums will help unlock new capital, technology, and expertise for a sector still in its early stages.
