(JUBA) – A two day Editors Workshop organised by the National Editors’ Forum (NEF) has officially opened in Juba, bringing together 30 editors from various media houses across South Sudan. The event, which began on Thursday, is scheduled to conclude on Friday with the election of new NEF office bearers who will serve a two year term.
The workshop is being held under the theme “Strengthening Editorial Excellence Ahead of South Sudan’s 2026 Elections.”
It aims to equip media professionals with tools to enhance journalism standards, focusing on the Journalistic Code of Conduct, Editorial Guidelines and responsible election reporting.
National Minister of Information, Hon. Michael Makuei Lueth, officiated the opening and commended the National Editors’ Forum for its role in uniting editors and strengthening professional media practices. He stressed the importance of guarding against misinformation and fake news, especially as South Sudan prepares for its general elections scheduled for December 2026.

Hon. Makuei also reaffirmed the government’s commitment to supporting the media sector, including plans to provide election specific training to journalists ahead of the 2025 pre-election activities.
Representing development partners, the UNESCO Country Director stressed the critical role of editors as gatekeepers of accurate and timely information. He reiterated UNESCO’s continued support for South Sudan’s media development, particularly in promoting ethical standards and media freedom.
Chuol Jany, the NEF Interim Chairperson and Chief Editor of the Catholic Radio Network, expressed appreciation to partners for supporting the workshop. He appealed to the government to further recognise the role of the media in public engagement, including in the dissemination of public service announcements and official communication.
The National Editors’ Forum, formed to promote ethical journalism and editorial coordination, is expected to elect its permanent leadership at the close of the workshop.
