Russia and South Sudan Pledge Stronger Cooperation

(JUBA, SOUTH SUDAN) – Russia and South Sudan have agreed to continue work aimed at strengthening bilateral cooperation, following talks between Moscow’s top envoy in Juba and a senior government minister.

Russian Ambassador to South Sudan Aleksandr Kosmodemiyanskiy met with the Caretaker Minister of Information, Communication Technology and Postal Services, Ateny Wek Ateny.

During the talks, the two sides discussed topical issues on the bilateral agenda.

An agreement was reached to continue work aimed at strengthening Russian-South Sudanese cooperation.

The meeting is the latest in a series of high-level engagements between Juba and Moscow in recent months.

According to The Dawn Newspaper, South Sudan and Russia have been seeking to strengthen bilateral cooperation in agriculture, capacity building and investment. In September 2026, Agriculture Minister Clement Juma Mbugoniwia met with Ambassador Kosmodemiyanskiy to discuss Russian support for irrigation, mechanisation and seed modernisation.

The Office of the President reported in May 2026 that Presidential Affairs Minister Africano Mande Gedima held talks with a Russian delegation led by Deputy Energy Minister Roman Marshavin. The discussions focused on energy and education, with both sides agreeing to move toward a Memorandum of Understanding.

The Russian state news agency Sputnik reported in July 2026 that President Salva Kiir Mayardit had confirmed he would attend the third Russia-Africa Summit in Moscow on 28th and 29th October 2026.

According to the African Press Agency, Ambassador Kosmodemyanskiy pledged Russia’s support for South Sudan’s December elections during a meeting with Minister Gedima in April 2026. He said South Sudanese electoral officials would undergo training in Russia.

The Office of the President reported in September 2026 that the two countries were deepening ties ahead of the elections and the Russia-Africa Summit.

Russia formally recognised South Sudan’s independence on 11th July 2011. Diplomatic relations were established on 22nd July 2011.
