South Sudan Moves to Expand Domestic Cancer Treatment

(JUBA) – The Minister of Trade and Industry, Hon. Atong Kuol Manyang, met today with leaders of the South Sudan Cancer Association Network (SSCAN) and the Community Empowerment for Progress Organization (CEPO) to discuss plans for affordable local cancer treatment centres.

During the meeting, the groups explained the urgent need to improve domestic healthcare facilities. Currently, many South Sudanese must travel abroad for cancer treatment, which is costly and often inaccessible.

The organisations announced that specialised centres will open soon, with a formal launch scheduled for 4th February 2026 under the Ministry of Health.

Hon. Atong Kuol Manyang praised the initiative, calling cancer a concern that affects all citizens through daily consumption and health habits. She highlighted the key role of the South Sudan National Bureau of Standards (SSNBS) in protecting public health. The Ministry is working to:

+ Ensure imported food meets strict safety requirements.

+ Test products for harmful chemicals.

+ Monitor the quality of goods to prevent health risks from substandard items.

In her closing remarks, the Minister reaffirmed the government’s commitment to the project.

“The country is ours, and our health is our collective responsibility,” she said. “We must support this initiative fully. The Ministry will continue to promote the cause and engage international partners to secure funding and resources for these treatment centres.”

The Ministry of Trade and Industry said it is committed to ensuring trade practices in South Sudan contribute to the nation’s health and safety.
