Kiir Promotes Top Generals in SSPDF and NSS

(JUBA) – President Salva Kiir Mayardit, Commander in Chief of all organised forces in South Sudan, presided over the promotion of several senior officers in the South Sudan People’s Defence Forces (SSPDF) and the National Security Service (NSS) on Monday, 15 September 2025.

The ceremony was held at the President’s office in Juba and attended by the Minister of Defence and Veterans Affairs, General Chol Thon Balok.

Vice President Dr. Benjamin Bol Mel was promoted from Lieutenant General to full General in the NSS. The Minister of National Security, Mamur Obote Mete, and the Presidential Advisor on National Security Affairs, Madut Dut Yel, also received promotions to the rank of General.

In a statement following his promotion, Dr. Bol Mel expressed gratitude to President Kiir for the honour. He acknowledged the guidance and support he has received throughout his career and pledged to uphold the trust placed in him. He also thanked the First Lady, Mary Ayen Mayardit, for her support and for instilling the values that have guided his leadership.

Dr. Bol Mel emphasised the role of the NSS as the guardian of South Sudan’s sovereignty, peace and stability and praised the men and women of the Service for their daily sacrifices in protecting the nation and “committed himself to the principles of loyalty, discipline and service above self.”

He further stressed the link between security and economic development, noting that, in his role as Vice President and Chairperson of the Economic Cluster, he would ensure that security institutions and operations support sustainable economic growth in South Sudan.

He concluded by stating that the ultimate measure of the NSS’s work will be the confidence of every South Sudanese to live in peace and raise their children in a nation of progress and opportunity.

Promotions in SSPDF and NSS
