(JUBA) – President Salva Kiir Mayardit has instructed South Sudan’s new Chief of Defence Forces, General Dau Aturjong Nyuol, to implement comprehensive reforms aimed at transforming the South Sudan People’s Defence Forces (SSPDF) into a disciplined, modern and accountable military institution.
Speaking at the swearing in ceremony held at the State House in Juba on Wednesday, 10 July 2025, President Kiir emphasised the urgent need to clean up the military payroll by removing “ghost names” and to improve the welfare of soldiers across all ranks.
“This is a position of great responsibility and I trust in your ability to serve with loyalty, discipline and vision,” Kiir said in his address to the new army chief.
The President laid out a detailed reform agenda for General Dau, focusing on both internal reforms and strategic cooperation with international military partners. Among the top priorities listed were the following:
| Reform Priority | Objective |
|---|---|
| Remove ghost names from payroll | Ensure salaries go only to active personnel |
| Secure food and fuel supplies | Improve logistics and welfare for troops |
| Unify SSPDF | Build a national army that serves the people and the law |
| Strengthen cooperation with partners | Expand regional and global military ties |
| Enhance discipline and leadership training | Promote professionalism within ranks |
General Dau, a seasoned military officer, responded with a pledge to lead the SSPDF with integrity and to uphold the military’s constitutional duties, including defending national sovereignty and protecting the people of South Sudan.
“I accept this responsibility with full commitment to reform, discipline and national service,” Gen. Dau stated after taking the oath of office.
