(Dar es Salaam) – Kenya’s national women’s football team, the Harambee Starlets, delivered another impressive performance at the CECAFA Women’s Championship in Tanzania by beating South Sudan 4-0 in their third group match. This victory continues their unbeaten run in the tournament and puts them in strong contention ahead of their final match against hosts Tanzania.
The Starlets showed their intent early in the game when Faith Mboya found the back of the net just three minutes after kickoff. Despite several chances in the first half, South Sudan managed to hold Kenya to a narrow 1-0 lead going into the break.
In the second half, Kenya’s attack became even more effective. Violet Nanjala extended the lead soon after the restart, followed by a well-placed goal by Martha Amunyolet in the 66th minute. Amunyolet has now scored four goals in the tournament, placing her just behind Tanzania’s Opah Clement, who leads the scoring chart with five goals.
Elizabeth Ochaka sealed the victory with a fourth goal in added time, bringing the final score to 4-0. The win marks the second time Kenya has scored four goals in a match during this competition, having previously beaten Uganda by the same margin.
With three wins from three games, the Harambee Starlets remain tied on nine points with Tanzania, though the hosts currently lead the standings on goal difference. Saturday’s match between Kenya and Tanzania will likely determine the tournament winner, as the championship follows a round-robin format where each goal and point can make the difference.
The Harambee Starlets will need at least a draw or a win with a better goal margin than Tanzania to lift the title.
