South Sudan Launches $41.8 Million Agricultural Project to Strengthen Food Security

(JUBA) – South Sudan has launched a new 41.8 million US dollar Sustainable Agricultural Development Project, aimed at improving food security and building climate resilience in rural communities.

The project, funded by the International Fund for Agricultural Development, or IFAD, was officially launched in Juba on Tuesday and will be implemented in Terekeka, Bor, Mvolo, and Mundri West.

Speaking at the launch, Minister of Fisheries and Livestock Anyotti Adigo Nykuach, representing Vice President Dr James Wani Igga, said the initiative supports the government’s efforts to reduce dependence on humanitarian aid by developing stronger and more productive food systems.

Minister of Agriculture and Food Security Clement Juma Mbugoniwia said the project aligns with the ministry’s long-term vision for agricultural development and pledged full technical support to ensure lasting benefits for rural farmers.

The project will focus on strengthening sorghum and fisheries value chains, improving market access, reducing post-harvest losses, and expanding access to agricultural and financial services.

IFAD Country Programme Coordinator Esther Kenyi highlighted climate adaptation and institutional capacity building as key components of the initiative.

During the event, government officials and implementing partners signed a project agreement to begin implementation. The project will be carried out in partnership with IFDC and Welthungerhilfe.

Officials say strong collaboration among stakeholders will be essential to ensuring the project delivers sustainable benefits and contributes to South Sudan’s long-term economic stability.
