(JUBA COUNTY) – Authorities in Juba County have opened a new market in Mangalla Payam as part of efforts to reduce congestion in the capital and improve safety for traders and residents.
The Dumadang Market in Radolo Boma is now cleared and ready for allocation, with officials inviting accredited South Sudanese traders to apply for space. The move is part of a wider plan to organise trading areas and shift businesses away from overcrowded zones in Juba.
County officials said the market includes basic facilities such as parking areas, waste collection points and sanitation services. The project is intended to improve trading conditions and reduce risks linked to overcrowding, including frequent market fires reported in urban centres.
Authorities confirmed that 30 percent of the market space has been set aside for members of the Chamber of Commerce. Traders have been directed to apply through the Mangalla Payam office, where verification processes will be carried out before allocation.
Officials said all applicants will undergo checks to ensure compliance with legal and safety requirements. They warned that businesses involved in illegal activities, including the sale of drugs, will not be allowed to operate in the new market.
The allocation process is expected to follow clear procedures, with priority given to traders who meet the required standards and demonstrate the ability to develop and use their plots within the set timeframe.
Local authorities also stressed that access to the market will be open to all South Sudanese traders without discrimination. They said allocations will not be influenced by tribal considerations but will be based on eligibility and capacity.
Business representatives welcomed the initiative, saying it could improve coordination among traders and support more orderly commerce in Juba. They urged traders to follow registration procedures and comply with regulations.
Officials warned against any attempts to disrupt the process, stating that legal action would be taken against those who interfere. They called on all stakeholders to support the reforms aimed at creating a more organised and stable trading environment in South Sudan’s capital.
