Dr Riak Gok Majok, PhD: Inequality and the Lost Years of National Service
(By Dr Riak Gok Majok, PhD)
In response to the recent post about using a rickshaw, I would like to express my gratitude. To those who reacted positively, thank you. To those who disagreed with the content, I also extend my thanks.
The post was intended to deliver three key messages:
+ Perseverance
+ Humility
+ Negligence
Let me expand on the third point. Many young people, under the age of 40, working in the Office of the President and in other senior offices, already own fleets of luxury cars, live in grand houses and have large sums of money in their bank accounts. They have become extremely wealthy at the very start of their lives, with many years still ahead of them to prosper further.
Meanwhile, those of us who gave our youthful years to serve this country, and who are now in the evening of our lives, are deliberately left in poverty. Where is the justice in this?
Please do not tell me to “create a job for yourself.” Why should I? I already have the skills and experience required to make a meaningful contribution to the development of my country.
This message is directed to the President of the Republic. I am not speaking from jealousy. I am only pointing out a difficult truth.
Dr Riak Gok Majok, PhD, is a South Sudanese academic.
