(YAMBIO) – Western Equatoria State has begun airlfiting 39 students to Aweil in Northern Bahr el Ghazal State to benefit from the Adut Salva Kiir Scholarship Programme.
The beneficiaries include 21 girls and 18 boys selected based on academic and social criteria, with priority given to vulnerable students and children of veterans.
The programme is named after Adut Salva Kiir Mayardit, the daughter of President Salva Kiir, who was appointed Senior Presidential Envoy on Special Programmes in August 2025, according to The Radio Community. The post was previously held by Benjamin Bol Mel, who was promoted to vice president.
Radio Tamazuj reported in October 2026 that Kubako Emmanuel, Deputy Director for Examination and Assessment at the State Ministry of General Education and Instruction and chairperson of the scholarship programme in Western Equatoria, said vulnerability and academic performance were key selection criteria.
He said students who completed Primary Eight and obtained Distinction or Credit were considered, particularly those whose families could not afford secondary education.
Emmanuel said some students had already travelled by air, while others were being transported through Juba to Aweil. He said air transport was chosen because of poor road conditions in Western Equatoria.
“Because of our road situation in Western Equatoria, it was not possible for us to take the students by road. We therefore decided to airlift them with the support of His Excellency,” Emmanuel said.
Some beneficiaries welcomed the opportunity. Kubanina Victor said she hoped to complete her secondary education and become a politician, while Mborije Kaka said she hoped to become a doctor or establish her own company.
Tambua William, a resident of Yambio, thanked the Government of South Sudan for supporting vulnerable students through the scholarship programme.
The 39 students are expected to continue their secondary education from Senior One to Senior Four under the Adut Salva Kiir Scholarship Programme.
