(JUBA) – The British Ambassador to South Sudan hosted a gathering of former and newly selected Chevening scholars in Juba this week, bringing together a diverse group of South Sudanese professionals whose lives and careers have been shaped by their studies in the United Kingdom.
The event was attended by alumni of the prestigious Chevening Scholarship programme, including the current Minister of General Education and Instruction, Dr. Kuyok Abol Kuyok, who shared personal stories of how their academic experiences in UK universities had influenced their thinking and strengthened their ability to contribute meaningfully to South Sudan’s development.
The Chevening programme, funded by the UK Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO), provides fully funded scholarships for emerging leaders from across the globe to pursue one-year master’s degrees at top UK institutions. It has played a significant role in equipping South Sudanese professionals with the knowledge and skills to support national progress across government, civil society, and the private sector.
Speaking at the event, the Ambassador expressed his delight in meeting both the returning alumni and the next cohort of scholars preparing to travel to the UK. He emphasised the UK’s ongoing commitment to investing in human capital and supporting leadership development in South Sudan.
According to alumni who spoke at the gathering, the opportunity to study in the UK offered more than just academic training. Many described how it broadened their worldviews, deepened their understanding of governance, leadership, public service and empowered them to return home with renewed purpose.
The UK government typically allocates an estimated £18,000 to £30,000 (approximately 82.8 million SSP to 138 million SSP, or $18,000 to $30,000 USD at the July 2025 rate of $1 = 4,600 SSP) per scholar annually, covering tuition, living expenses and travel.
The Ambassador reaffirmed the UK’s continued support for South Sudan’s development through education and institutional partnerships. He encouraged the scholars to make full use of their time in the UK and return ready to lead change in their communities and beyond.
