Archbishop Elias Taban to Release Memoir on War and Peace/Access Radio Archives
(Yei) – The Archbishop of the Evangelical Presbyterian Church, Elias Taban Parangi, has announced plans to publish a personal memoir tracing his journey from child soldier during South Sudan’s conflict to becoming a respected global religious leader.
In a written statement shared with Access Radio, Archbishop Elias confirmed that the upcoming book will detail his early experiences of violence and hardship during South Sudan’s civil war.
He said the story will explore the devastating effects of conflict on children and communities, with the aim of offering both a historical record and a message of hope.
The memoir will reflect on the personal struggles he faced growing up in a war torn environment, including the loss of family and the emotional toll of surviving life in the jungle.
According to Elias, the book will centre on themes of resilience, faith, and the power of education and spirituality in overcoming trauma.
Despite a harsh and often dangerous youth, he explained, his path eventually led him to peace and reconciliation. He described how he used his life story not only to inspire others but also to serve his community and promote healing among those affected by war.
Elias noted that the book will also cover the important role played by his wife, Bishop Anngrace Asha Taban, in their shared journey.
He said Anngrace was the first woman from Central Equatoria to become an officer in the Sudan People’s Liberation Army (SPLA), and together they worked to build a peaceful and resilient society.
He also highlighted their work in establishing one of the earliest orphan and widow care centres in SPLA/M-liberated areas.
“We were pioneers in taking care of orphans and widows in the SPLA/M liberated zones,” he said, pointing to their long standing commitment to supporting vulnerable groups during and after the war.

The Archbishop said the memoir will also offer commentary on South Sudan’s wider socio-political environment and examine the role of religion in peacebuilding and conflict resolution.
He further stressed the importance of defending children’s rights and providing safe environments for the country’s youth.
He hopes the book will serve as a source of encouragement for readers from all walks of life, including scholars, writers, researchers, and the general public.
“The book is a message of hope, forgiveness, and the possibility of change,” he said. “It’s about how someone can rise above adversity and make a positive contribution to the world.”
No publication date or distribution details have been announced, and it remains unclear when the book will be made available to the public.
