Growing Up Without My Parents Spotlights Challenges of Orphaned Children
(JUBA) – South Sudanese author Dominic Living Wawa has launched his new book titled Growing Up Without My Parents, a personal story that he hopes will inspire communities and raise awareness of the challenges faced by vulnerable children.
During the launch and book signing event held on Sunday 14 September 2025, Wawa expressed gratitude to supporters who have stood by him throughout his journey as a writer. He said the book reflects his personal struggles and the wider experiences of children who grow up without parental care in South Sudan.
Among the special guests at the event was the First Lady of Central Equatoria State, Mama Awate Justin, who presented a motorcycle to Baba Henry Sebit, the man credited with rescuing Wawa during his childhood. Wawa described the gesture as a powerful act of solidarity, saying it highlighted the role of community support in protecting vulnerable children.
Wawa also visited commissioners in Lainya and Morobo counties to deliver copies of his book. He encouraged residents of the two counties, especially young people, to read the book and draw lessons of hope and resilience.
He stressed that the book is not only a personal story but also a call for action to support children who face hardship, abandonment or loss of parents.
“This book is for every child and every community that believes in hope and the power of support.”
Support has also come from the business community. Optimized Trading FX, led by CEO Jacob Gifty, also known as the Kakwa Ambassador, purchased 100 copies of the book in support of children in need. Fifty of these copies were distributed through Manoliza in Juba to ensure access for readers who may not be able to buy a copy.
Wawa said proceeds from the book will go towards raising awareness and strengthening support for vulnerable children across South Sudan. He appealed to the public to purchase copies and help spread the message of resilience, unity and community responsibility.
The author emphasised that his journey has been shaped by the generosity and encouragement of many individuals and organisations. He called on South Sudanese citizens and leaders to continue supporting initiatives that protect and uplift children without parental care.
