Sixty Lakes State Teachers Sit Exams to Upgrade Skills

(WULU COUNTY) – Sixty teachers in Wulu County, Lakes State, are preparing to sit school examinations they need to advance their own education, while also carrying responsibility for the education of others.

Speaking on Radio Miraya’s Nationwide programme, roving teacher trainer Namara Patrick said the group, which includes 20 women, is receiving support through an accelerated secondary education programme.

He said some teachers struggle with professional training materials because of their own education levels. Completing Senior Four would help close that gap.

The support is part of the Regional Teachers Initiative for Africa, which Oxfam implements with the education ministry and partners.

Oxfam country director Shabnam Baloch said the project supports 160 teachers, with 25 undertaking training that leads to accredited teaching qualifications.

She said that without teacher training, quality education cannot be achieved.

For participating primary school teacher Samora Makuach Dut, the training has changed who does the work during lessons.

He said he previously relied on teacher centred instruction. Now, pupils take part more actively while he guides their learning.

Teachers also meet to work through classroom difficulties together.

The project ends in November. Baloch said another funding cycle remained uncertain, but pointed to accredited qualifications, ministry adoption of training materials and peer learning as lasting gains.
