(NUMULE) – Yesterday marked a major step for the South Sudan Red Cross (SSRC) in Nimule, Eastern Equatoria State, with the opening and handover of a new SSRC Nimule Unit office. The facility aims to strengthen humanitarian efforts in the area, particularly at this key border point with Uganda.
The inauguration brought together leaders from the Red Cross & Red Crescent Movement and government officials. Attending the ceremony were Mohamed Babiker, Head of Juba Cluster for the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC), covering South Sudan, Uganda and Tanzania, Celine Leone, Deputy Head of Delegation for the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC), Paula Fitzgerald, Mohamed Babiker’s successor, and Fanan Simplicious and Taban Sabir from SSRC leadership.
The Mayor of Nimule Municipal Council, Caesar Longa Fully, was also present alongside local community leaders and members.
A major highlight of the event was the recognition of SSRC volunteers. Authorities praised their tireless efforts in responding to emergencies, including a recent cholera outbreak, Mpox monitoring and the ongoing health screening of travellers at the Nimule border. Volunteers were described as central to saving lives and supporting public health in the region.
The new office, funded by the IFRC and ICRC, is expected to enhance the SSRC’s ability to coordinate and deliver services. The improved facilities will enable staff and volunteers to work more efficiently and respond quickly to humanitarian needs in Nimule and surrounding areas.
Red Cross officials said the office will serve as a hub for health programmes, emergency response, and community services, strengthening the SSRC’s commitment to the people of Nimule and Eastern Equatoria.
