(JUBA) – The South Sudan Red Cross marked a significant moment in its operations with the opening of a new National Warehouse at its headquarters in Juba, alongside a farewell ceremony for Mohamed Babiker, the Head of Delegation for the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies covering South Sudan, Uganda and Tanzania.
The event brought together the leadership of the South Sudan Red Cross, representatives from the International Committee of the Red Cross and partner organisations.
Before the farewell, Mohamed Babiker led officials in the official opening of the National Warehouse, which is expected to strengthen storage capacity and improve the delivery of humanitarian assistance across South Sudan.
According to the South Sudan Red Cross, the new warehouse will serve as a central logistics hub to support emergency response and relief operations nationwide.
The facility also includes a water yard intended to support nearby communities, adding a local benefit to the humanitarian infrastructure.
Following the opening, a farewell ceremony was held to mark the conclusion of Mohamed Babiker’s one year assignment in South Sudan.
In his remarks, he described his time in the country as meaningful and said South Sudan had become a place he proudly called home. He thanked the South Sudan Red Cross, the International Committee of the Red Cross and partner national societies for their continued support and cooperation.
During his tenure, Mohamed Babiker provided strategic leadership that supported several key developments within the South Sudan Red Cross.
These included the establishment and launch of the National Warehouse, improvements in internet connectivity across all twenty one SSRC branches, support for youth camps and volunteer empowerment, and efforts to strengthen partnerships and institutional capacity.
The Secretary General of the South Sudan Red Cross, John Lobor, reflected on his long association with Mohamed Babiker within the Red Cross Movement.
He noted that they began as volunteers more than twenty seven years ago and later rose to leadership roles, describing the journey as a shared commitment to humanitarian service.
Representatives from the International Committee of the Red Cross and partner organisations also paid tribute to Mohamed Babiker, highlighting his leadership approach and cooperation with national and international partners.
The South Sudan Red Cross said the opening of the warehouse and the progress made over the past year reflected growing efforts to improve humanitarian preparedness and response in the country, as the organisation continues to support vulnerable communities across South Sudan.
