(POKULA, YEI RIVER COUNTY) – Local health authorities in Yei River County have announced plans to re-open the Primary Health Care Unit in Pokula Boma, bringing hope to thousands of residents who have been without nearby medical services for nearly a decade.
The health facility has remained non-functional since the outbreak of conflict in 2016, forcing many residents to depend on traditional herbal remedies, while critically ill patients travel approximately 22 miles to access treatment in Yei town.
Speaking to Access Radio on Friday, Yei County Health Director Simon Musoga said the county is taking steps to restore services at the health facility.
“The issue of Pokula is in plan and we have sent health people to assess the condition of the building and now we are also planning to deploy community health workers who finished from Yei Health Training Institute to work in the health centre,” Musoga said.
According to Musoga, the plan includes assessing and renovating the facility, mobilising essential medicines, and deploying newly trained community health workers to improve access to healthcare in the area.
He also disclosed that Yei County has secured a standby ambulance to support emergency referrals for patients from rural communities requiring urgent medical attention.
The planned reopening follows concerns raised by local leaders over the challenges residents face in accessing healthcare services in Pokula and surrounding villages.
