Innovation Bootcamp to Prioritise Women and Vulnerable Youth in Yei

(YEI RIVER COUNTY) – A new innovation bootcamp is to be rolled out in Yei River County to help young people develop their talents, turn ideas into solutions and contribute to local development, according to plans discussed at a meeting in Yei.

The meeting took place at the youth office in Yei between the Yei River County Youth Association, FACE (Facilitating Action for Community Empowerment) and CSI.

The bootcamp will be carried out under the Pathways to Education (P2E) Project, according to the consortium partners.

The P2E project is a six year initiative funded by the Mastercard Foundation and led by War Child Canada, according to project documents. It aims to reach over 98,000 youth with secondary education and support more than 35,000 employment transitions for displaced and refugee youth in South Sudan.

The project is being implemented across 14 refugee and displacement camps in 9 counties and 7 states. Key partners include Windle Trust International, Humanitarian and Development Consortium, Titi Foundation, UNHCR and multiple South Sudanese refugee led organisations.

CSI, or Community Support Initiative, is a South Sudanese organisation that works to fight illiteracy and help communities through education and training programmes. Its work includes encouraging school enrolment, establishing basic education schools in remote areas and training teachers and school management committees.

Under the ASET programme, young people who had dropped out of school are already returning to their studies, according to the partners.

CSI is preparing to roll out the bootcamp to develop young innovators and encourage creativity.

The initiative targets young people between 18 and 35 years of age, with 70% of places reserved for women, according to the plans.

It also gives priority to persons with disabilities, internally displaced persons, refugees, returnees and host communities.

The P2E project aims to create supportive environments that enable marginalised youth, particularly young women and people with disabilities, to gain quality education and access to dignified work, according to programme documents.

The meeting ended with a shared commitment to create opportunities for young people in the county, according to the Chairperson of the Yei River County Youth Association, Mr Gaga Frank Justin, who commended FACE and CSI for their continued work on youth empowerment in Yei.

He called for stronger collaboration and partnership, spoke about the main challenges facing young people, and shared the association’s plans for institutional development.
