Gbeho: Young People Key to Peace in Western Equatoria

(YAMBIO, WESTERN EQUATORIA STATE) – The head of the United Nations Mission in South Sudan has completed a two day visit to Western Equatoria State, stressing the role of young people in building peace.

Anita Kiki Gbeho, Special Representative of the UN Secretary-General in South Sudan and head in charge of UNMISS, visited Tambura County on Tuesday, according to a statement from the Office of the Governor.

She met state leaders, civil society representatives, religious leaders, women’s groups and traders to assess the situation and hear community concerns.

Gbeho said the discussions showed a shared desire for peace and stability, and stressed that young people have a critical role to play in building a peaceful future.

On Wednesday, speaking during the handover of a youth empowerment centre in Yambio, Gbeho said the facility would give young people opportunities to develop leadership skills, exchange ideas and take part in peacebuilding initiatives.

Western Equatoria State Caretaker Governor Badagbu Daniel Rimbasa welcomed Gbeho’s visit and thanked UNMISS for its continued engagement with the state.

He stressed the importance of cooperation between the state government and UNMISS in promoting peace, supporting youth development and addressing community concerns, particularly in Tambura County.
