(JUBA, SOUTH SUDAN) – Russia’s top diplomat in South Sudan has held a series of meetings with South Sudanese officials in Juba, with talks centred on infrastructure, industry and preparations for an upcoming summit in Moscow.
Ambassador Aleksandr Kosmodemiyanskiy met with the caretaker governor of Western Equatoria State, Badagbu Daniel Rimbasa, on Tuesday 6th October 2026, according to the Office of the Governor – Western Equatoria State.
The meeting focused on peacebuilding and agricultural development in Western Equatoria State.
The state government said it is seeking to strengthen partnerships with diplomatic and development actors to address peace and development priorities, including agriculture, which is vital to the livelihoods of communities in the state.
The two sides also exchanged views on areas where cooperation could contribute to peace and development.
The Embassy of the Russian Federation in the Republic of South Sudan said the talks covered the potential for attracting Russian companies to develop infrastructure and industry in the region.
An agreement was reached to continue joint work to promote Russian-South Sudanese cooperation.
In a separate engagement, Ambassador Kosmodemiyanskiy met with General Pieng Deng Kuol, chairman of the National High-Level Committee on the Final Status of Abyei Area, according to the Embassy of the Russian Federation.
The two sides discussed Juba’s position on settling the conflict over the disputed territory, including possible ways to advance the peace process.
An agreement was reached to continue exchanging views on the dynamics of the political situation in the region.
The Russian ambassador also paid a courtesy visit to the caretaker Minister of Cabinet Affairs, Dr Martin Elia Lomurö, on 5th October 2026, according to the Ministry of Cabinet Affairs.
The two officials discussed South Sudan’s participation in the upcoming Russia-Africa Summit, scheduled for 28th and 29th October 2026 in Moscow.
They also discussed ways to strengthen bilateral relations between Juba and Moscow.
The third Russia-Africa Summit will be held in Moscow on 28th and 29th October 2026, according to TASS.
Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said in April 2026 that a cooperation plan between Russia and African countries until 2029 will be approved at the summit.
Russian presidential adviser Anton Kobyakov said in June 2026 that organisers expect Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi to attend the event.
