(JUBA) – South Sudan’s Council of Ministers has approved money to support the national football and basketball teams ahead of international competitions in Tanzania, Dakar and other regional venues.
The Cabinet, chaired by President Salva Kiir Mayardit, directed sports bodies to work with the Ministry of Finance so that the approved funds are released in time for team preparations and participation. No figure was given for the total allocation.
Ministers noted that sport helps build national unity, peace and social cohesion. They said it also gives young South Sudanese athletes a chance to represent their country abroad.
The national basketball team drew particular praise. Its strong showings in African competitions and on the world stage have earned the team international recognition and helped place South Sudan on the global basketball map. Officials said the team’s success has inspired a new generation of young athletes across the country.
The coming competitions will feature leading African teams fighting for places in major international tournaments, including the 2027 Basketball World Cup.
The meeting was attended by the Minister for Youth and Sports, Aton Kuol Manyang Juuk. The Council said the move showed the government’s commitment to using sport as a tool for development, unity and peace building across South Sudan.
