(JUBA) – The Governor of Central Equatoria Mujung Emmanuel has held talks with some of the country’s leading sports figures in a move aimed at shaping the future of sport in South Sudan.
The meeting took place in Juba on Monday, 15 September 2025 and focused on developing young talent, promoting harmony and pride and raising the country’s profile in international competitions.
The high level gathering brought together well known figures from South Sudan’s sporting community. Among them were Luol Deng, President of the South Sudan Basketball Federation, Francis Amin Michael, President of the South Sudan Football Federation and Choul Pal Laam, President of the South Sudan National Olympics Committee.
Also present were Chol Anei Ayii, Secretary General of the National Olympics Committee, Hon. Juma Stephen Lugga, the outgoing President of the National Olympics Committee and Hon. Emmanuel Tete Ezbon, Commissioner of Juba County.

Discussions focused on practical strategies to build stronger sporting structures, encourage youth involvement and expand South Sudan’s representation on the global sporting stage. Officials agreed that sports could provide both opportunities for young people and a source of national pride.
The governor said the State government is fully committed to supporting sports, stressing their unique value in uniting communities. He described sports as more than a competition, calling them a bridge for peace, unity and security, which he said are central to Central Equatoria’s policies.
A statement from the state press unit said the meeting marks a new effort by the State leadership to align government priorities with the growing ambitions of South Sudan’s sporting federations and associations:
“With basketball, football, and athletics already drawing international attention, we believe that stronger structures at the State level will help secure lasting progress.” – CESGPU
According to the state governor’s office, discussions are also expected to lead to joint initiatives that will not only nurture talent but also provide young people with alternatives to conflict and unemployment.
