(JUBA) – South Sudan’s national basketball team faced a setback at AfroBasket 2025 as young Phoenix Suns centre Khaman Maluach, widely expected to bring defensive strength and NBA experience, did not appear on the final roster.
Many observers had anticipated that the 18 year old prospect could replicate or surpass the impact of his compatriot Bol Bol in representing South Sudan at the continental tournament, gaining crucial experience ahead of the NBA season.
Maluach’s absence was particularly felt during South Sudan’s 88-80 defeat to Guinea, a team that shot 50 percent from three-point range, including a perfect four-for-four effort from Suns-associated player Mamadi Diakite. Analysts suggested that Maluach’s defensive presence could have helped mitigate such scoring threats.
The reasons for Maluach’s decision to skip AfroBasket remain unclear. While social media speculation suggested he might participate, reliable sources did not confirm this. Experts believe he may have prioritised practice and development in Phoenix under the Suns’ coaching staff, a logical decision for a rookie seeking to adjust to the NBA.
South Sudan’s roster for the tournament also excludes JT Thor, Marial Shayok, Bul Kuol, Sunday Dech, and Carlik Jones. Wenyen Gabriel remains a player of interest for the Suns as a potential future third centre should they trade Nick Richards.
Despite his absence, Maluach’s defensive capabilities were evident during Summer League appearances, though he remains a raw prospect still adapting to professional level intensity. He primarily plays near the paint to block shots and deter opponents but is not yet comfortable defending beyond the rim.
Participating in AfroBasket might have offered him a chance to expand his skill set against high level competition, including players such as Diakite.
For fans eager to follow his development, the opportunity to see Maluach in a competitive international environment will have to wait, as the young centre focuses on his growth within the Phoenix Suns’ system.
