(JUBA) – The Minister of Information, Communication Technology and Postal Services, Michael Makuei Lueth, has pledged to take steps to improve radio and communication services in the Abyei Administrative Area following concerns raised by local authorities.
The commitment was made on Thursday during a meeting between Minister Makuei and the Chief Administrator of Abyei, Justice Charles Abyei Jok, who brought attention to the poor quality of communication signals and limited access to telecommunication services in the area.
Justice Abyei Jok said that Abyei continues to face major difficulties in communication due to inadequate radio coverage and weak mobile network signals. He appealed to the Minister to intervene by engaging major telecommunications companies, including MTN and Digitel, to expand their operations to Abyei.
He explained that enhancing communication infrastructure would help connect the area more effectively with Juba and the rest of the country, especially at a time when the region’s security situation has significantly improved and residents are beginning to return to agricultural activities.
No financial pledges or timelines were provided during the meeting, but the Minister assured the administrator that his ministry would follow up with telecom providers to explore solutions for the area’s communication needs.
