(JUBA) – The Government of Central Equatoria State has approved a new fee for the issuance of yellow fever vaccination cards following a Cabinet meeting chaired by Governor Emmanuel Adil Anthony in Juba on Wednesday.
The decision was made during an extra ordinary meeting of the State Cabinet after the State Minister of Health presented a memo proposing a revised charge aimed at covering the cost of the yellow fever vaccine. Cabinet members discussed the proposal and agreed to set the fee at 30 United States dollars or its equivalent in local currency.
At the current market reference rate of 1 United States dollar to 7,100 South Sudanese pounds, the approved amount is equivalent to 213,000 South Sudanese pounds. State officials said the adjustment is intended to support the sustainability of vaccination services while ensuring access for the public.
After deliberations, the Cabinet unanimously endorsed the new rate and instructed the State Ministry of Health to strengthen enforcement against individuals involved in the illegal issuance of yellow fever vaccination cards. The State Ministry of Finance, Planning and Investment was directed to put the new charges into effect.
Governor Adil, in his address to Cabinet members, urged ministers to increase their efforts in delivering services across all ministries. He stressed the importance of improved performance and accountability as the state begins the new year, noting that effective public service remains a key priority for the government.
The Governor also reaffirmed the state government’s commitment to improving service delivery, particularly in the health sector. He said the revised fee is intended to provide fair and reasonable charges for residents while addressing the problem of fake vaccination cards, which pose risks to public health and undermine trust in official health systems.
Health authorities noted that proper regulation of yellow fever vaccination cards is important for South Sudanese citizens who travel within the region, as valid certification is often required for cross border movement for work, trade and other activities.
