(JUBA) – Governor Emmanuel Adil Anthony of Central Equatoria State visited Juba’s Custom Market on Tuesday following a fire outbreak on Monday that destroyed several shops and commodities, affecting many traders.
The Governor was accompanied by the National Minister of Trade and Industry, Hon. Atong Kuol Manyang, State Minister of Cabinet Affairs, Hon. Lupai Satimon, State Minister of Trade and Industry, Hon. Stephen Lado Onesimo, and Juba City Mayor, H.W. Christopher Sarafino Wani.
During the inspection, Governor Adil expressed sympathy and solidarity with traders affected by the fire and commended security personnel for their efforts in controlling the blaze and maintaining order.
He emphasised the need for traders to plan long-term solutions, including building permanent shops and reorganising markets to reduce risks of future incidents.
A probe committee will be formed to investigate the cause of the fire and assess the full extent of damage within the Custom Market. The Governor highlighted that understanding the incident will inform safer market practices in the future.
Both Governor Adil and the National Minister of Trade and Industry urged the public to cooperate with the Juba City Council during ongoing efforts to clear street vendors. The initiative aims to provide clear passages, decongest streets, and improve safety for both traders and pedestrians.
The Governor reassured street vendors that calm and cooperation are necessary as the Mayor engages them to reach a common agreement and designate new market locations within the city.
In a related visit, the Governor and his delegation inspected Konyo-Konyo Market, which is operating normally after road vendors were relocated.
Authorities confirmed that security in the city remains stable and urged residents and traders to continue supporting market reforms aimed at bringing Juba’s markets to international standards.
