(JUBA) – A high level team from the Government visited Custom Market and Konyo Konyo Market in Juba on Tuesday to assess the destruction caused by a fire that swept through Custom Market the previous day.
The delegation was led by the National Minister of Trade and Industry, Hon Atong Kuol Manyang. She was joined by Central Equatoria State Governor Emmanuel Adil Anthony and the Mayor of Juba City Council. Their visit aimed to understand the full extent of the damage and to show support to traders who lost property in the blaze.
During the visit, Governor Adil expressed sympathy to business owners whose shops and goods were destroyed. He said the Government would open a full investigation to establish the cause of the fire. He appealed for calm among affected traders and promised that those found responsible would face justice.
The National Minister of Trade and Industry also conveyed her concern. Hon Atong Kuol Manyang described the incident as a serious setback for traders and the wider economy. She said the inspection was important for the Ministry to understand the losses and guide the next steps of the investigation. She assured traders that the Government would stand with them during this difficult period.
The Minister encouraged business owners to consider moving towards stronger permanent structures rather than iron sheet shops. She said permanent buildings would offer greater protection and reduce the scale of losses should similar incidents occur in the future.
No monetary figures were provided by officials, and the total value of losses has not yet been made public.
