Juba Traders Seek Support After Fire/Handout Photo
(JUBA) – A fire broke out at Customs Market in Juba on Monday, 1st December 2025, destroying several shops and goods, the Central Equatoria State Civil Society Network (CESCSN) has reported.
CESCSN expressed concern for the traders affected by the fire, noting the loss of goods and capital represents a major blow to their livelihoods. The organisation also warned that the incident could affect the wider economy of Juba, where many residents rely on the market for essential supplies.
The fire could also reduce revenue for both the Central Equatoria State and national governments, potentially straining the delivery of public services.
CESCSN extended sympathy to local and foreign business owners whose properties were damaged and urged calm as authorities continue investigations. The police responded promptly and initiated an investigation into the cause of the fire.
The organisation called for a thorough assessment of losses and stressed the importance of providing justice and support to the victims. It also appealed to development partners to assist those affected in any way possible.
CESCSN recommended that Juba City Council and the Central Equatoria State Government review safety measures in the market and improve early warning systems to prevent future fire outbreaks. Public awareness campaigns on fire safety were also encouraged.
Finally, CESCSN urged citizens to act responsibly, protect property, and show care for one another to prevent similar incidents.
