(JUBA) – South Sudanese author and humanitarian Dominic Living Wawa is preparing to release his first memoir, Growing Up Without My Parents: A Former Street Boy’s Mission to Change Lives, on 30 August 2025.
The book is a personal and emotional reflection on Wawa’s childhood in a conflict affected South Sudan and his journey from homelessness to founding a home for orphaned and vulnerable children.
The memoir written over a period of more than two years provides readers with an intimate view of what it means to grow up without parents in a war torn society. Wawa has described his experiences with hunger, isolation, rejection and the psychological scars left by abandonment. However, his story is not one of despair. It is instead a powerful testament to endurance, healing and hope.
“This book is for young people, for fathers, for leaders,” Wawa said during an early announcement. “It powerfully illustrates that broken lives can not only be rebuilt but also repurposed to serve others.”
In addition to recounting his personal story, the book touches on wider social issues in South Sudan and other post conflict regions, especially those affecting street children and orphans.
Wawa uses his story to bring attention to the lasting consequences of family separation, trauma and social neglect. His journey eventually leads to the founding of an orphanage, built from his desire to ensure that no child endures the pain he once did.
The cover of the book, designed to reflect the emotional nature of its content, features an image of a small child symbolising the author’s own childhood.
He has invited individuals, organisations and institutions to support the book launch and help spread its message.
“I believe this book has the potential to ignite change and inspire resilience in all who will read it,” he said.
He also extended an open call for partnerships and support for those interested in promoting the launch or collaborating in future projects.
The book release is scheduled for nexth month and will be available for purchase both locally and online. For those interested in contributing to the launch or learning more about Wawa’s ongoing work with children, he can be contacted at dominicliving94@gmail.com.
