(YEI RIVER COUNTY) – Seven secondary schools in Yei River County are taking part in a two-day inter-school Music, Dance and Drama competition aimed at promoting talent, peace and cultural diversity among young people.
The fourth annual competition kicked off in Yei town on Thursday and is organized by a local NGO Talent Initiative for Development (TIDE) South Sudan, in collaboration with partners and the county education department.
The event seeks to promote extracurricular activities in schools, peaceful coexistence and talent development among students. Organizers also say the initiative encourages young people to understand democracy and good governance at the local level.
Speaking to Access Radio via WhatsApp from New York, United States, on Thursday afternoon, TIDE founder Samuel Sebit Emmanuel said the peaceful conduct of the competition over the past four years demonstrates the role young people can play in promoting peace and cultural diversity.
“For the four past years, we can implement this activity without any conflict among participating schools, and this shows that young people are committed to promoting peace and cultural diversity in South Sudan.”
Samuel said the best-performing schools and individual winners will receive gifts and recognition medals when the competition concludes on Friday.
Participating schools include St Joseph Secondary School, Immanuel Model Secondary School, Kinji Secondary School and Excel International School, EPC Nehemiah secondary school and Nile High secondary school.
The highly watched event event is taking place at the Youth gardens, inside Yei town.
