Only 11% of South Sudan’s Health Facilities Fully Functional

(JUBA, SOUTH SUDAN) – Only 11% of health facilities in South Sudan are highly functional, while 18% are non functional, according to the South Sudan Health Cluster Dashboard for August 2026.

The dashboard, published by the World Health Organization and the Health Cluster, shows that 38% of facilities are moderately functional, 27% are limitedly functional, and 6% are not classified.

A total of 475 health facilities are supported by partners across the country, with 39 organisations reporting, including 22 international non governmental organisations and 17 national non governmental organisations.

The dashboard draws on reports from 7,756 partners covering January to August 2026.

By level of care, 25% of primary health care centres are functioning, while primary health care units account for the largest share of supported facilities.

Funding remains a major challenge. As of 1st October 2026, the 2026 humanitarian response plan for health is 47% funded, with $114 million received against $54 million in unmet requirements.

The response plan requested $114 million, of which $75 million was prioritised. The funding gap stands at 53%.

A total of 6.3 million people are in need of health assistance, with 2.9 million targeted for support.

Cumulative response indicators for 2026 show 2.8 million outpatient consultations, 1.0 million people reached with services, and 323,000 people reached with mental health and psychosocial support services.

The dashboard also reports 41,600 deliveries assisted by skilled birth attendants and 21,200 children under five treated for severe acute malnutrition with medical complications in stabilization centres.

In addition, 110,800 children received three doses of the pentavalent vaccine, while 41,420 pregnant women attended their fourth antenatal care follow up visit.

A total of 254,000 uncomplicated malaria cases were treated with artemisinin based combination therapy, and 37,700 pregnant women attended their fourth antenatal care visit.

The response has reached 34% of the targeted population, with 2.9 million people targeted against 1.0 million reached so far.

Partners reporting by month fluctuated through the year, with 39 organisations reporting in January and August, 38 in June and July, 41 in May, and 36 in March and April.
