President Kiir Travels to Kenya for Political and Economic Engagements

(JUBA/NAIROBI) – South Sudan’s President Salva Kiir Mayardit travelled to Kenya on Sunday for a series of political and economic engagements, according to his Press Secretary.

Speaking to the state-owned South Sudan Broadcasting Corporation (SSBC), Press Secretary Arek Ajou Deng said President Kiir is expected to hold bilateral talks with his Kenyan counterpart, President William Ruto.

Ajou noted that the visit marks President Kiir’s first regional trip since the dissolution of the government on 22 September 2026, as South Sudan prepares for elections scheduled for 22 December 2026.

“Today his Excellency President Salva Kiir has travelled to the republic of Kenya for high level bilateral talks with his counter part and those meetings are aimed at strengthening cooperation between the two neighboring countries. The discussions during this visit are expected to focus on bilateral relations, the South Sudan electoral preparations and the measures required to ensure peaceful, credible and successful elections.”

Ajou said President Kiir is also expected to hold sideline meetings on economic and infrastructure development initiatives, with particular attention on the recently launched oil refinery at Kenya’s Lamu Port.

“The two sides are also expected to discuss matters around economic and infrastructural cooperation including the recently launched oil refinery in Lamu last week and the respective roles South Sudan and Kenya will be playing on the operation of the refinery”

According to the Press Secretary, the engagements underscore the importance of strengthening economic cooperation and advancing strategic regional infrastructure projects for the mutual benefit of both countries and the wider region.

Ajou added that President Kiir’s visit reaffirms South Sudan’s commitment to regional cooperation, peaceful elections, and constructive engagement with neighbouring countries and the international community.
