Six Counties in Jonglei Get Caretaker Commissioners

(BOR) – The Caretaker Governor of Jonglei State, Moses Majok Gatluak Thou, has issued Gubernatorial Decree No. 02/2026 appointing six Caretaker County Commissioners to various counties across the state.

The decree, signed on Friday, 2nd October 2026, was issued under Article 99(2)(a) of the Transitional Constitution of Jonglei State, 2011, as amended, together with Republican Decree No. RSS/OP/RD-J-243-09/2026.

The newly appointed caretaker commissioners are Mai Met Thoan for Akobo County, Gatluak Gai Teny for Ayod County, Daniel Deng Panchol for Bor County, Manyang Gatluak Bany for Fangak County, Nhial Deng Puuch for Pigi County, and Biel Lam Pech for Uror County.

The appointments take immediate effect from the date of signing, according to the decree. The Governor’s Office said the appointments add to the recently appointed caretaker commissioners for Twic East and Duk counties.

Radio Tamazuj reported in September 2026 that Chol Deng Gatluak was named caretaker commissioner of Duk County, while James Magok Mabiei was appointed for Twic East County, through Gubernatorial Order No. 01 of 2026.

The appointments came amid ongoing tensions between youth from Twic East and Duk counties. Radio Tamazuj reported that more than a dozen people were killed in late September 2026 when an armed youth group from Twic East attacked residents in Apiir Palaidhiim village in Duk County.

Kenya Mach, information secretary of the Jonglei State Women’s Association, welcomed the appointments and said they could help address the escalating violence between the neighbouring communities.

She called on the caretaker governor to establish a peace committee inclusive of affected communities, youth, women, faith-based groups and politicians to address the root causes of the violence.

The decree was issued under the Hand and Seal of the Caretaker Governor of Jonglei State Government in Bor.

In a separate event, Governor Moses joined family, friends, political associates and well-wishers at the funeral prayer of the late Timothy Taban Juch, held at Midan Mijiki.

The solemn prayer was attended by top government officials, members of the State House of Assembly, party leaders and members of the community.

In his tribute, the Caretaker Governor described the late Honourable as a dedicated statesman, a loyal party man and a selfless leader who served Jonglei State with distinction and the fear of God.

“Late Hon. Timothy Taban Juch was a man of peace, integrity and honour. His death is a great loss not only to his family but to the entire Jonglei State. He contributed immensely to the growth of our democracy and the development of our state,” the Caretaker Governor said.

Governor Moses prayed for the repose of his soul and for God to grant the family the strength to bear the loss, adding that his legacies will continue to live on. He assured the family of the continuous support of the Jonglei State Government at this difficult time.

The late Timothy Taban Juch was a prominent South Sudanese politician who served as the Governor of the defunct Akobo State from August 2019 until its dissolution in February 2020.

He was also a member of the National Legislative Assembly representing Akobo County, having been elected as an independent candidate in the 2010 general election. He previously served as Jonglei State Minister for Information and Communication and was appointed Commissioner of Akobo County in 2014.

Radio Tamazuj reported in September 2019 that Taban, upon his appointment as Governor of Akobo State, pledged to restore peace and peaceful coexistence among communities in the greater Jonglei region.

He said at the time that he would work in collaboration with all communities to build peace and ensure efficient service delivery. He also pledged to work with his counterparts in the region to build confidence and trust among communities.
