Central Equatoria and Lakes States Target Illegal Roadblocks

(JUBA, SOUTH SUDAN) – Caretaker governors from Central Equatoria and Lakes states have agreed to tackle illegal checkpoints along their shared border, officials said.

Central Equatoria Governor Augustino Jadalla Kamilo Wani met Lakes Governor Rin Tueny Mabor to discuss the issue.

The two leaders said illegal checkpoints restrict the free movement of people and goods between the neighbouring states.

They agreed to work together to reduce the number of illegal checkpoints along the border.

The governors also discussed sharing information to strengthen security in the border area.

They linked border tensions to livestock movement and climate related pressures affecting both states.

The leaders agreed on immediate measures to prevent cattle movements from causing community tensions.

Both governors reaffirmed their commitment to cooperation on peace and security ahead of the country’s general elections scheduled for December.

The meeting comes as South Sudan prepares for polls amid ongoing communal violence and economic hardship. President Salva Kiir Mayardit has directed state governors to prioritise electoral preparedness and peaceful coexistence.
