(ABIDJAN) – The playoff schedule for the quarterfinals of the 2025 FIBA Women’s AfroBasket tournament has been confirmed, with South Sudan set to face Egypt in a decisive match on Wednesday 30 July. The winner will advance to play Uganda’s Gazelles in the quarterfinals the following day.
Uganda, Nigeria, Mali and hosts Côte d’Ivoire all secured automatic spots in the quarterfinals after finishing top of their respective groups during the initial group stage. The remaining eight teams, including South Sudan and Egypt, will compete for the four remaining quarterfinal positions.
South Sudan’s women’s basketball team, a relatively new entrant on the continental stage, will face Egypt in the evening fixture, set to tip off at 7:00 pm East Africa Time. This is a significant test for South Sudan, who have been making strides in recent years following their FIBA debut in 2021.
Both teams are familiar opponents for Uganda, who beat South Sudan but initially lost to Egypt during the AfroBasket Zone V qualifiers. However, Uganda later avenged that defeat by beating Egypt in the final to claim direct qualification to the main tournament.
The Gazelles are now preparing for their Thursday quarterfinal fixture against the winner of the Egypt versus South Sudan match, scheduled for 3:00 pm EAT. This match will be a key focus for fans across East Africa, especially in South Sudan, where the growth of women’s basketball has drawn increasing attention.
