(PANYANA, MOROBO COUNTY) – The Bishop of the Episcopal Church of South Sudan in Panyana Diocese has called on parents and guardians in Morobo County to ensure that their children return to school following the resumption of the academic calendar last week.
Bishop Seme Nigo made the appeal amid reports of low enrolment in both primary and secondary schools across the county. Officials from the Morobo County Education Department say many pupils and students have not yet reported to class.
They cited insecurity, economic hardship, poor road networks, weak school infrastructure and a shortage of trained teachers as the main factors affecting school attendance in the area.
The bishop addressed worshippers during Sunday Mass at St Samson Omachi Church in Panyana. He said education should continue despite the many challenges facing local communities:
“We want our children to be sent to school in some of the already opened schools even if there are challenges, because education prepares children to take over leadership and development programmes in the future.”
He described education as the main foundation for a better future and peaceful coexistence. He urged parents and guardians not to deny children learning opportunities because of current economic and security difficulties.
The bishop also reaffirmed the Church’s commitment to praying for peace and promoting reconciliation among communities in Morobo County and across South Sudan.
He said churches would continue to work with families, schools, and local leaders to encourage stability and social unity, which are essential for learning to take place.
The remarks were delivered during a church service attended by more than 900 people. During the event, 55 children received confirmation.
Local education officials welcomed the bishop’s message and said community support is needed to improve enrolment and reduce dropout rates.
They added that increasing access to education remains critical for long term development and peace in South Sudan, particularly in border and rural counties such as Morobo.
