(JUBA) – Governor Emmanuel Adil Anthony of Central Equatoria State has called for closer cooperation between the Church and the Government to support peace, reconciliation and healing efforts across the state and the country.
He made the remarks on Wednesday during the House of Bishops meeting of the Episcopal Church of South Sudan, which was held in Juba under the theme “Take Heart; I have overcome the world” from the Book of John, chapter sixteen, verse thirty three.
The Governor welcomed the bishops to the capital and assured them of their safety during their stay. He thanked the Episcopal Church for what he described as its strong record of service in South Sudan.
He said the Church has played an important role in spiritual guidance, education and community development, which he described as a sign of hope for the population. He likened the bishops and clergy to “fishers of men”, who continue to support communities in difficult times.
Governor Adil noted that Central Equatoria State is facing several challenges and said this has made cooperation between the Church and government more important.
He said peace and unity remain essential for resolving the social and political tensions that affect both the state and the wider country.
He called for collective responsibility and said that South Sudan will overcome its difficulties if leaders in both public and religious institutions work together.
The Primate and Archbishop of the Episcopal Church of South Sudan, The Most Reverend Dr Justine Badi Arama, said the meeting aimed to address major issues facing the Church.
He said the bishops are discussing matters of faith, Church administration and the mission of the Episcopal Church, as well as the role of the Church in supporting communities across the country.
Archbishop Badi said the gathering also provided space for Church leaders to reflect on current challenges and to give guidance to clergy and faithful in all dioceses.
The meeting brought together bishops from different parts of South Sudan at a time when the country is still working to strengthen peace and stability.
