(JUBA) – Central Equatoria State Governor Emmanuel Adil has called on families and faith communities to strengthen moral and family values as a way to address rising social challenges in Juba, including the involvement of young people in gang related activities.
Speaking to worshippers during Christmas celebrations at St James Bari Parish of the Episcopal Church of South Sudan in Juba, Governor Adil said families play a central role in shaping the behaviour of children and young people. He urged parents and guardians to focus on Christian values at home, noting that many individuals involved in anti social behaviour are members of families within the community.
The governor said strong families grounded in moral teachings can help raise children with discipline, respect, and a sense of responsibility. He encouraged unity, love, and peace among communities as South Sudan approaches the new year, stressing that social problems require collective responsibility from families, churches, and leaders.
Governor Adil made the remarks while attending the Christmas service, where he joined Christians in celebrating the birth of Jesus Christ. He said faith institutions remain important partners in promoting peace, social harmony, and positive values across Central Equatoria State and the country at large.
Addressing the congregation, the Archbishop and Primate of the Episcopal Church of South Sudan, Most Reverend Dr Justin Badi Arama, called on Christians to embrace love as a key force for unity within the church and across South Sudan. He said love is essential in overcoming differences and building peaceful communities.
The archbishop reminded worshippers that Christmas symbolises God’s love for humanity, reflected through the birth of Jesus Christ. He said this message should inspire Christians to live in harmony, forgive one another, and contribute to national unity.
The Christmas celebration at St James Bari Parish brought together government officials from national and state levels, members of parliament, church leaders, and members of the Christian community. Observers said the gathering reflected cooperation between the government and the church in promoting freedom of worship, peaceful coexistence, and social cohesion in South Sudan.
Community leaders present said such engagements provide an opportunity for dialogue on social challenges affecting families and young people, particularly in urban areas like Juba, where rapid population growth has placed pressure on social structures.
