
Vice President Issues Statement on Passing of Peter Phanuel Yatta
(JUBA) – The Office of the Vice President and Chair of the Economic Cluster, Professor James Wani Igga, has issued a statement following the passing of Hon. Peter Phanuel Yatta. Yatta passed away on Saturday, 3 January 2026, in Juba while receiving medical treatment after a short illness.
The statement noted Yatta’s role in the Sudan People’s Liberation Movement and his contribution to South Sudan’s independence. His work with the SPLM is recognised as part of the country’s liberation history.
“Comrade” Yatta was born on 18 May 1944. His passing was formally acknowledged by the Vice President’s office, and a memorial banner was prepared with the dates of his birth and death, including the biblical verse:
“But the path of the just is like the shining sun, that shines ever brighter unto the perfect day” (Proverbs 4:18).
