(JUBA) – A former Israeli military trainer who worked alongside southern Sudanese liberation fighters in the 1960s and 1970s has been awarded the honorary rank of General in the South Sudan People’s Defence Forces.
David Uri Ben-Uziel, aged 91, received the honour from President Salva Kiir Mayardit at a ceremony at the Presidency on Thursday. He was also placed on the force’s non-active list.
Known by his wartime name “John”, Ben-Uziel worked closely with the Anyanya One movement under General Joseph Lagu. President Kiir was among the fighters who served during that period.
The recognition marks a chapter of South Sudan’s liberation history in which Ben-Uziel helped build ties between the Anyanya movement and Israel. He assisted with military training and the delivery of essential supplies, including medicines, uniforms, communications equipment, and other logistical support.
Historical records also show he travelled widely through Southern Sudan, often on foot across difficult ground, to improve coordination among liberation forces and encourage cooperation between commanders and communities during a formative period of the struggle.
Speaking at the gathering, Ben-Uziel reflected on his years alongside the people of Southern Sudan. He said their determination and resilience remained an enduring source of inspiration, and that it had been a privilege to contribute to their pursuit of freedom and self-determination.
President Kiir said the honorary promotion shows the nation’s appreciation for those who stood with the people of Southern Sudan during their liberation struggle.
He also paid tribute to the people and Government of Israel for the support given during that period, noting that the bonds formed in those years remain an important part of the historical relationship between the two nations.
