(Juba) – Kenyan defender Hanif Wesonga has signed a two year contract with South Sudanese football champions Jamus SC after ending his time with KCB FC in Kenya’s top league.
Wesonga, 26, officially joined the Juba based club on Monday, 23 June, just a day after he chose not to extend his stay at KCB. His contract had expired, making him a free agent.
In their statement, Jamus SC welcomed the Harambee Stars defender, praising his skill, experience, and leadership qualities as important additions to their squad.
“Officially, today, we are excited to announce that we have signed a contract with Kenyan super defender Hanif Makale Wesonga, a former player at KCB FC. Wesonga is also a key player in the senior men’s national team of Kenya. We proudly welcome you to the best team in South Sudan,” the club posted on its social media platforms.
Jamus SC recently completed a strong season in which they won both the South Sudan Premier League and the domestic cup. The team collected 68 points, finishing six points ahead of Kator in a closely fought race. With the new season approaching, the club is reinforcing its squad in hopes of maintaining their local dominance and making an impression beyond South Sudan’s borders.
Wesonga, who started his career at Musingu High School and later played for Samitsi FC, described the move as a personal dream fulfilled.
“It is honestly a dream come true. This is one of the career moves I have always wanted to achieve, and when the opportunity presented itself, I decided to take the challenge,” he told Mozzart Sport after signing.
At KCB, Wesonga gained a reputation as a calm and dependable defender with an ability to contribute goals from the back. His consistent performances led to regular invitations to the Kenyan national team, though he remained on the sidelines during most of coach Engin Firat’s time in charge.
Now, Wesonga says he is fully focused on his new mission with Jamus. “My main aim now is to help the club retain the league crown. I’ve always desired to win a league title, and I believe this is the perfect opportunity to do so. My focus is firmly on the new season,” he said.
No financial details of the contract were disclosed, but local player deals in South Sudan typically range between 1 million and 3 million South Sudanese Pounds (SSP), which is roughly equivalent to USD 700–2,100 based on current exchange rates.
Jamus SC’s ability to attract an international defender suggests the club is keen on building a more competitive squad, possibly with more signings expected before the 2025/26 campaign kicks off.
