(JUBA) – The Bank of South Sudan (BoSS) has held talks with MTN South Sudan to strengthen digital payment services and expand mobile money access across the country.
The new Governor of the Bank of South Sudan, Johnny Ohisa Damian, met managers of MTN South Sudan in Juba on 27th February 2026 to discuss improvements to the MTN MoMo platform.
The meeting focused on system stability, compliance with financial regulations and protection of consumers using mobile money services.
Officials said digital payments are central to widening financial access in South Sudan, where many citizens remain outside the formal banking system.
They said stronger mobile money systems could reduce reliance on cash transactions and improve transparency in business and public payments.
Francis Matseketsa, Chief Executive Officer of MTN South Sudan, outlined operational challenges affecting service reliability. He cited network limitations and liquidity shortages as key concerns. He said the company is committed to improving service delivery in coordination with the central bank.
The Governor said cooperation between the regulator and telecom operators is essential to ensure secure and efficient payment systems. He noted that stronger oversight and technical upgrades would help build public confidence in digital transactions.
The meeting was attended by First Deputy Governor for Policy and Banking, Tong Akech Deng, and senior officials from the Bank’s National Payment System department.
Mobile money services have grown in South Sudan in recent years, especially in urban centres such as Juba, as businesses and households seek alternatives to cash.
However, service interruptions and limited network coverage continue to affect users in some areas. The central bank says continued engagement with operators is aimed at improving reliability and expanding access nationwide.
