(JUBA) – The Bank of South Sudan says traders across the country should start accepting digital payments to make business faster and safer.
The Central Bank held a meeting in Juba with the National Chamber of Commerce and other officials to discuss how to move away from full cash trading.
The Governor of the Bank, Dr Addis Ababa Othow, said mobile and electronic payments can improve business cash flow and reduce risks linked to carrying physical money.
The Chairman of the Chamber of Commerce, Ladu Lukak, said he will speak with market traders and business owners to encourage them to accept electronic payments.
The Chief Executive of the Bankers Association, Betty Angasi, said banks are ready to work with shops and traders. She said joint awareness campaigns will soon begin so that more people understand how digital payments work.
The meeting also agreed that every shop and supermarket in South Sudan should be able to accept electronic payments, including phone based services.
Supporters of the digital payment system say it can protect traders from theft, help record sales, and attract more customers who prefer fast paperless payment.
