
(JUBA) – Mobile money service providers in South Sudan have pledged to expand their coverage across the country to support the government’s strategy for promoting digital payment systems.
The commitment was made by senior representatives from MTN and Digitel during meetings with the Bank of South Sudan’s Department of Communication and Public Relations.
The move is intended to advance the country’s transition towards a more sustainable and efficient digital economy, which authorities say will help modernise commerce and improve access to financial services.
De Chan Awuol, Executive Vice President of Digitel Holdings, said his company is prepared to lead awareness campaigns highlighting the benefits of digital banking. He praised the Bank of South Sudan for its role in developing infrastructure for electronic transactions.
Harrison Daka, Senior Manager for Products and Services at MTN Mobile Money (MoMo), confirmed that MTN plans to extend its network to more regions, enabling both traders and consumers to complete purchases using mobile money. He noted that this approach could help reduce liquidity shortages that have affected businesses and individuals across the country.
The initiative aligns with regional trends in East Africa, where mobile based payment systems are already a key tool for economic inclusion.
The Bank of South Sudan has indicated that the success of the digital payment rollout will depend on both private sector investment and public awareness. O
