(SEOUL, SOUTH KOREA) – South Sudan is exploring cooperation with South Korea in healthcare and pharmaceutical development, with a focus on access to medical products and building local healthcare capacity.
The discussions took place during a visit by the Senior Presidential Envoy on Special Programs, Hon. Adut Kiir, to the Joonghun Pharmaceutical facility in South Korea.
The visit provided an opportunity to learn about the facility’s operations and explore prospects for cooperation that could strengthen South Sudan’s healthcare sector, according to the envoy’s office.
Joonghun Pharmaceutical has longstanding ties with South Sudan, having supported the Lee Tae-seok Foundation’s Smile Tonj project since 2011.
The company has supplied medical goods to hospitals in Tonj and Juba.
This includes specialty medicines worth about KRW 500 million ($340,000 at current rates) delivered to Juba Teaching Hospital in August 2023.
In 2024, South Korea was the largest source of South Sudan’s vaccine imports.
It supplied $4.29 million worth of vaccines, blood, antisera, toxins and cultures.
The visit was made in line with the mandate assigned by President Salva Kiir Mayardit, according to the envoy’s office.
The envoy’s office said the engagement forms part of wider efforts to foster institutional partnerships and identify opportunities to improve essential services in South Sudan.
