EU Envoy Pledges Support for Yei Health Services

(YEI RIVER COUNTY) -The European Union Ambassador to South Sudan, His Excellency Per Enar Enarsson, has pledged to raise concerns over funding shortages affecting health services in Yei River County following an inspection visit to health and humanitarian projects in the area.

Speaking after meeting Yei River County Commissioner, Hon. Samuel Henry Malimbo, on Tuesday, Ambassador Enarsson said the delegation assessed healthcare services and preparedness measures at the Ebola Preparedness Centre located at Yei Civil Hospital.

The Ambassador noted that humanitarian partners, including UNICEF, continue to support healthcare delivery in Yei despite growing challenges caused by reductions in global humanitarian funding. He commended development and humanitarian organisations for their efforts in maintaining essential services for local communities.

During the meeting, Commissioner Samuel Henry Malimbo outlined the difficulties facing the county’s health sector, revealing that many health facilities have ceased operations due to inadequate financial and operational support. According to the Commissioner, more than 42 health facilities are no longer receiving assistance, leaving only seven facilities currently operational across the county.

In response, Ambassador Enarsson assured local authorities that the concerns raised during the visit would be shared with South Sudan’s Ministry of Health as part of efforts to explore additional support and funding opportunities for healthcare services in Yei River County.

Commissioner Malimbo said he would also brief the Governor of Central Equatoria State, Emmanuel Adil Anthony, and advocate for stronger interventions to improve healthcare services across the county.

The visit forms part of ongoing engagements between the European Union, humanitarian partners and local authorities aimed at assessing essential services and identifying priority areas for continued support in Yei River County.
