EU Ambassador and Yei Leaders Renewed Push for Peace, Humanitarian Support and Development

(YEI RIVER COUNTY) – The European Union Ambassador to South Sudan has joined local authorities, humanitarian organizations and development partners in Yei River County to discuss security, humanitarian response and development priorities.

The Ambassador attended the monthly Area Reference Group meeting alongside Yei River County Commissioner Samuel Henry Malimbo, county officials and partner organisations.

During the meeting, Commissioner Malimbo said the security situation in Yei remains calm, attributing the stability to close cooperation between local authorities, communities and partners.

The Area Reference Group Secretary, Mabe Moses, reported that more than 2,000 South Sudanese are voluntarily returning to Yei every month from Uganda and the Democratic Republic of the Congo. He added that the county is also hosting over 3,000 internally displaced persons, including families displaced from Lainya County and others who fled violence in Panyume.

Mabe appealed for increased support to vulnerable communities, citing ongoing shortages in food, healthcare, shelter, education and livelihoods.

Meanwhile, the Director of Peacebuilding, James Wani Banja, praised county efforts to curb the sale and use of illicit drugs, saying the measures have helped reduce gang-related activities. He also highlighted ongoing dialogue between cattle keepers and farming communities aimed at promoting peaceful coexistence.

On agriculture, Director Asiki Moses commended development partners for providing farmers with improved seeds, farming tools and training. However, he warned that rising market prices continue to challenge agricultural production and access to farming inputs.

The meeting concluded with calls for stronger collaboration among local authorities, humanitarian agencies and development partners to address the growing needs of returnees, displaced families and host communities while sustaining peace and development in Yei River County.
