(Yei River County) — Youth leaders and members of the creative industry in Yei River County have joined hands to promote peace and social cohesion through talent development, as part of efforts to curb gang-related activities and strengthen community unity.
On Saturday, the Yei River County Youth Association, in collaboration with the Yei River County Artist Agency, held a meeting that brought together a range of creatives, including artists, comedians, journalists, and DJs, all focused on strengthening unity and youth engagement.
Organized through a youth-led effort in Juba, the engagement focused on addressing growing concerns over youth involvement in gangs in Yei River County.
During the discussions, participants explored how programs in drama, music, and other creative fields can provide alternative pathways for young people and steer them away from violence.
The gathering emphasized the importance of creativity as a tool for social change and encouraged young people to use their talents to build a safer, stronger, and more united community.
It also brought different creative groups onto one platform to exchange ideas and design practical strategies for promoting peace, nurturing talent, and transforming communities through artistic expression.
Speakers stressed that creativity is not only a form of entertainment but also a powerful driver of social change. They urged young people to use their talents to spread messages of unity, resilience, and non-violence.
Organizers said the initiative is part of efforts to build a safer and more inclusive environment in Yei, where young people can thrive through innovation and collaboration rather than conflict.
Yei River County, once considered one of the more stable and economically active areas in South Sudan, has seen a surge in gang-related activities in recent years, particularly following the conflicts of 2013 and 2016.
Community leaders report that common forms of youth-related violence include theft, drug and alcohol abuse, street violence, and occasional clashes between rival groups.
Despite these challenges, youth leaders are expressing hope that collaboration with creatives will strengthen the role of arts and entertainment in shaping a peaceful future for Yei River County.
